The Biggest Mistake Most Bodyworkers Make
When teaching a business classes to bodyworkers, I often ask people if they know how much they need to make to make ends meet and what I find is that most people don’t. Why don’t people do the math on their finances? What I mean is, why don’t people calculate how much money they need to make to live the life they want?
One of my favorite exercises to help bodyworkers set their rate actually begins with this number and works backward to find the necessary price per session to meet the goal. Without knowing how much you need to make a year, it’s hard to know how much you need to charge per session to make your ends meet.
Most bodyworkers approach setting their rate by matching the “going rate” for a session in their area, considering their skill level, or trying to guess what people would be willing to pay. While these are all factors that should be generally considered, they are missing an important part of the equation i.e. your financial needs.
When I sit down to think about it, the most obvious reason people don’t want to know how much they need to live is a fear that they can’t accomplish it. Ignorance is bliss, right? But at the same time, it also can leave you trying to navigate the road to success in the dark and always struggling to keep your head above water.
I think it’s important to change the perspective on knowing this number. Instead of approaching it from a point of scarcity or fear, I want you to understand that knowing this number is actually empowering. Once you know the goal, you can make the changes necessary to attain it.
So, today I want to encourage those of you who have yet to sit down with these numbers to do so. It’s a great time to do it since most of the work is done from completing your taxes. While it may be a little daunting, I promise the clarity it provides will be rewarding.
